Italian Railways (1861–2025). From national unity to the challenges of the future

Italian Railways (1861-2025). From national unity to the challenges of the future is an exhibition narrative that traces the crucial role of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane (Italian State Railways) in the process of national unification. It merges a rigorous historical framework with the power of art—from De Nittis to Boccioni, from De Chirico to the latest contemporary trends—and new technologies. It's a journey through time to rediscover the very identity of the country in a new and exciting way.

Since 1861, the history of Italy and that of its railways have been virtually inseparable. Tracks, trains, and stations have contributed to forging a new collective identity, reflected in the works of artists and writers as a symbol of progress and modernity, but sometimes also of their inherent contradictions.

The exhibition itinerary, divided into four chronological sections, addresses the railway phenomenon on multiple, interconnected planes: graphic materials and documents, images, and works of art establish a close and intense dialogue to convey the emotional and imaginative dimension of train travel to the public.

The exhibition, promoted and organised by VIVE - Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia together with Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, will be open to the public from November 7, 2025 to January 11, 2026, in Zanardelli hall at Vittoriano.
