The Shield's Importance and Public Appearances

Following its donation to the Municipality of Rome, the shield was exhibited on several official occasions, starting as early as June 11, 1882, during the solemn funeral honours that the Municipality of Rome arranged in memory of Giuseppe Garibaldi, who died on June 2 at Caprera. In 1884, for the Italian General Exhibition in Turin, a pavilion dedicated to the Risorgimento was constructed, and in the section reserved for Garibaldi, among paintings, sculptures, photographs, documents, and relics belonging to the hero, the monumental shield was also featured, illustrated by the well-known Milanese engraver Vittorio Turati. The work was presented to the public again in 1932, in Rome, on the occasion of the major Garibaldian Exhibition organized for the fiftieth anniversary of the patriot's death, and subsequently in the exhibition for the centenary of his death, within the section "Garibaldi: the Myth and the Image." By that date, the shield had become part of the collections of the Central Museum of the Risorgimento in Rome, conceived in 1884 and opened to the public in 1970.
