The Artist’s Book: History, Imagination and Visual Storytelling

The workshop begins with a guided story set in Palazzo Venezia, centred on the figure of Pope Paul II, who used the Palace as his papal residence. Through a simple and engaging narrative, children are introduced to daily life in the Palace: its rooms, gardens, objects, sounds and the people who once inhabited the papal residence.

Drawing inspiration from the story, each child creates their own artist’s book, made up of a sequence of illustrated pages using collage, drawing, stamps, coloured paper, fabrics and natural materials. Each page represents a fragment of the story they have heard, reinterpreted in visual and symbolic form.

Clay Modelling Workshop

The workshop begins with an exploration of the decorations, sculptures and architectural elements of the Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia. Children are guided in recognising natural and decorative forms such as leaves, animals, faces and ornamental motifs.

By working directly with clay, participants experiment with three-dimensional forms: pressing, shaping, carving and creating small objects inspired by the elements observed during the visit. The activity focuses on the creative and sensory process, encouraging direct engagement with the material and allowing each child the freedom to express their own creativity.

Coats of Arms and Decorations through Plaster Casting

The architecture of the Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia is rich in symbols, coats of arms and decorative motifs that tell stories of identity, power and historical memory. Following a guided observation activity, children are introduced to the meanings of the symbols found throughout the museum, learning to understand them as forms of visual storytelling.

They then create small plaster casts using moulds featuring decorative motifs inspired by the elements observed during the visit. Once dry, the casts are decorated with colours, pigments and shimmering materials, transforming them into personal symbolic objects.

This interactive tour will guide participants through Palazzo Venezia and its green spaces, an oasis of art and nature. Inside the museum rooms, children will search for colours and shapes.

The tour then continues into the enchanting gardens, filled with palm trees, magnolias, cedars, camellias and box hedges. Here, children can observe the interplay of light and shade created by the vegetation and discover the vibrant colours of berries and flowers. Finally, they will take part in a workshop where they can create their own gardens on a specially designed surface using an original water-based colouring technique.
