The luxury of water. The water supply of Palazzo Venezia in past centuries

The fountain built by Carlo Monaldi between 1729 and 1730 on commission of Ambassador Barbon Morosini celebrates a fundamental event for the inhabitants of Palazzo Venezia: the connection to the city's water supply network and the possibility, at last, of drawing drinking water from the inner courtyard and no longer from the public fountains on the street. Starting precisely from this work, which is today significantly inactive, and taking advantage of the wonderful scenery of the garden reopened to the public in 2016, the visit will be an opportunity to discover how the water supply of an ancient palace in the heart of Rome worked, and that issues such as reducing waste, recycling waste and free access to sources of drinking water were also topical in past centuries. Lest we forget, there was a time when water was a luxury even in a papal residence.
