The issue of Engramma 222 – Copyleft & Internet Pirates – urgently raises the need to identify the critical nodes of the vexed question of copyright. It calls upon friendly scholars and researchers to engage in a shared reflection on issues central to the present and future of the production and circulation of knowledge. These include: the state of the art regarding the accessibility of digital resources for students and researchers in a context increasingly constrained by access barriers; the critique of the economic and legal status of those who manage the infrastructure of knowledge, from academic publishers to large platforms, who often operate according to purely market logics; and the claim for the right to the free dissemination and sharing of knowledge, understood as both a political principle and a necessary condition for learning.
To navigate these waters, we have deliberately adopted a posture: that of the pirate.
