This lecture aims to analyze the relationship between the political and socio-economic processes of postcolonial Africa and the Italian Left, particularly the Communist Party (PCI) and the Socialist Party (PSI), with a focus on the 1970s and 1980s and the positions expressed by some of the leading exponents of the two parties (Craxi, Berlinguer, Pertini, Napolitano).

Biography

Gianluca Scroccu is Associate Professor at the University of Cagliari, where he teaches Contemporary History. In autumn 2017 he was Visiting Fellow at the “Remarque Institute” – New York University. He works on the political and social history of republican Italy, the history of anti-fascism, and the relationship between civil religion and political religion in the history of U.S. presidents. In December 2016 he received the National Award “Fiuggi Storia – Fondazione Levi-Pelloni” and in October 2017 the National Award “Giacomo Matteotti”, promoted by the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, essay section, for the volume La sinistra credibile. Antonio Giolitti tra socialismo, riformismo ed europeismo (1964–2010), Carocci, 2016. In January 2026 he will publish a biography of Sandro Pertini with Salerno Editrice.
