State of Conservation

The work has reached us in a fragmentary condition, divided into nine distinct sections. Each fragment includes previously shattered portions, reassembled and consolidated through conservation treatments performed at different times. The surface showed encrustations and deposits of various kinds, due both to environmental factors and to chemical and biological deterioration.

Numerous cracks and fractures were observed: some originated during firing and were later repaired with beeswax, while others were caused by accidental damage over time and treated with mixtures of gypsum and animal glue. Although effective in the short term, these materials degraded over time, losing adhesion and compromising structural stability. This made new restoration work necessary, based on the principles of reversibility and chemical-physical compatibility with the original materials.
