So Far Away, So Close: Italy, the Mediterranean and Africa
from the 14th to the 20th Century

At the conclusion of the project “So Far Away, So Close”, conceived and supported by the Department for the Enhancement of Cultural Heritage of the Italian Ministry of Culture, VIVE – Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia, the National Roman Museum and the Colosseum archaeological Park, an international academic conference will be held on 19–21 October 2026.

The conference aims to examine the history of relations between Italy, the Mediterranean and Africa from the late Middle Ages to the present day, with particular attention to connections, encounters and conflicts, and mutual influences, including cultural exchanges in the broadest sense. In doing so, it seeks to move beyond traditional interpretative frameworks based on absolute otherness, exoticism, colonialism and neocolonialism.
