Online disinformation: from social media to artificial intelligence

CYCLE: Artificial Intelligence concerns everyone: invisible infrastructures, hidden Interests, Culture, and Democracy in the Age of Algorithms
SPEAKER: Gabriella Pasi
DATE: Tuesday, September 22, 6:00 PM
LOCATION: Bibliotheca Maior - Sala della Crociera

Online disinformation represents one of the primary challenges of the contemporary digital ecosystem. Its production and dissemination are closely linked to the technologies that organize and amplify information on the Web: from social media, which fosters its creation and virality, to Artificial Intelligence tools capable of generating increasingly realistic text and images.
Even art and literature are affected: false attributions of works, manipulated images, and AI-generated creations that mimic the style of great masters, presented as authentic, can alter the perception of cultural heritage and influence the market.
While technology cannot guarantee certain and automated identification of false or manipulated content, it can offer useful support tools for critical analysis and verification. This seminar proposes an informed reading of online disinformation, illustrating its mechanisms and presenting strategies to recognize potential warning signs and help mitigate its impact, including within the cultural sector.
