Guided tour of the exhibition “Rome on Coins. Art and Power in the History of the Eternal City”

The activity offers a guided tour of the section of the exhibition Rome in Coins. Art and Power in the History of the Eternal City hosted in the Sala Zanardelli. Spread across three venues, the exhibition uses coins as a key to interpreting and reconstructing crucial moments in the history and culture of Rome, placing them in dialogue with works of art, paintings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, installations and examples of material culture.

At the Vittoriano, the tour takes visitors through the role played by coin production in the modern and contemporary eras. Highlights on display include the Della Rovere Missal, illuminated by Jacopo Ravaldi, a masterpiece of fifteenth-century manuscript illumination (Turin, State Archives); Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Portrait of Pope Alexander VII Chigi (Rome, Gallerie Nazionali d’Arte Antica); and Maurizio Cattelan’s Untitled, which brings the narrative into the European present.
