Guided tour of the exhibition “Rome on Coins: Art and Power in the History of the Eternal City”

The activity consists of a guided tour of the section of the exhibition Rome on Coins: Art and Power in the History of the Eternal City housed in the Sala Zanardelli. Staged across three venues, the exhibition uses coins as a key to exploring pivotal moments in Rome’s history and culture, placing them in dialogue with works of art, paintings, sculptures, illuminated manuscripts, installations and examples of material culture.

At the Vittoriano, the tour traces the role of coin production in the modern and contemporary periods. Highlights include the Della Rovere Missal, decorated by Jacopo Ravaldi, a masterpiece of fifteenth-century manuscript illumination (State Archives, Turin); Gian Lorenzo Bernini’s Portrait of Pope Alexander VII Chigi (Gallerie Nazionali d’Arte Antica, Rome); and Maurizio Cattelan’s Untitled, which brings the account into the European present.
