A visit to the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, or Vittoriano, is an unmissable experience for anyone wishing to delve into Italian history and art. The complex, conceived in January 1878 in honor of the first king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II, and the entire Risorgimento process, has housed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and other memorials of our history since 1921. Participants enter through the monumental gate on Piazza Venezia, climb to the Altar of the Fatherland and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, observe the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II, and remain breathless before the sheer size of the Piazzale del Bollettino and the Sommoportico.
