A visit to the Vittorio Emanuele II Monument, or Vittoriano, is a must-see experience for anyone who wants to learn more about Italian history and art. The complex, conceived in January 1878 in honor of Italy's first king, Vittorio Emanuele II, and the entire Risorgimento process, has housed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and other reminders of our history since 1921. Participants will pass through the entrance through the monumental gate on Piazza Venezia, ascend to the Altar of the Fatherland and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, gaze at the statue of Vittorio Emanuelel II on horseback, and be breathless at the size of the Piazzale del Bollettino and the Sommoportico.
