Discovering the gardens: unexpected landscapes at Palazzo Venezia

Free guided tour of Palazzo Venezia
Tuesday 14 March, 5.30pm

On Tuesday 14 March at 17:30, on the occasion of National Landscape Day, VIVE invites the public to take part in the guided tour "Discovering the gardens: unexpected landscapes at Palazzo Venezia". The itinerary starts from the Great Garden, a green oasis in the heart of the city, originally the courtyard of the fifteenth-century palace, and transformed in the nineteenth century into a rich garden, embellished with a considerable variety of plants: palms, magnolias, box hedges, camellias and many more from all over the world. We continue with a visit to the viridarium or secret hanging garden, guarded by the porticoed loggias of the Palazzetto, originally inhabited by cypresses, laurel hedges and citrus trees. The guided tour, conceived as an artistic as well as naturalistic walk, explores the landscape design of the entire architectural complex from the outside: the medieval side of the Basilica of San Marco, the Renaissance loggia, the Passetto dei Cardinali and the splendid eighteenth-century fountain commissioned to sculptor Carlo Monaldi depicting the marriage between Venice and the sea.
