Rock crystal crucifix
Germany First half of 12th century
The crucifix is set on a small, truncated pyramid base with an image painted on what is in all likelihood parchment that is visible on both sides. The image is of a Christus triumphans, towards whom an angel descends from above, its arms outstretched towards the Saviour. Traces of plant motifs can be seen on the arms of the crucifix.

Details of work
Catalog entry
The work is characterized by the insertion in the shaft and arms of the crucifix of a painted parchment depicting a Crucifixion with Christ triumphans on both sides. Though it is by no means uncommon to find images painted on parchment inserted in rock crystal artifacts, in this specific case the relative complexity and meticulous execution of the figurative parts make the work particularly noteworthy. The stylistic and executive characteristics of the painted crucifix and the structure of the artifact are in keeping with the flourishing production of twelfth-century German rock crystal objects, most of which were used to enhance church possessions and treasures. The size of this crucifix would suggest that it was destined for private devotional use.
