The Artwork

The painting of Madonna della noce, depicts a miraculous event that, according to historical accounts, occurred on June 10, 1505, in San Polo Sabino, located in the province of Rieti.

The scene shows the Virgin Mary, dressed in black like the tertiaries of the Order of the Servants of Mary, seated on a walnut tree. In tears, Mary appeared to a young girl to show her the wounds caused by humanity's sins. She then entrusted the girl with a message: to invite people to do penance and rediscover their faith.

The painting was created to adorn the high altar of the small sanctuary built at the site of the apparition, which can still be visited today. The artist remains anonymous; it's believed to be an artist active in the early 16th century within the Umbrian-Abruzzese region, which was dominated by the figure of Saturnino Gatti.
