The Guard of Honour at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Two armed soldiers watch over one of the main remembrances of national history 24 hours a day

Two armed soldiers guard the Tomb of the Soldier 24 hours a day from 4th November 1921, i.e. from the day the body of the unknown soldier was buried inside the Altar of the Fatherland.

Originally it was established that the different Corps would each ensure the guard of honour for a decade, starting with the Carabinieri and gradually continuing with all the others. Today, however, the corps of the Italian armed forces rotate according to a calendar established each year.

Currently, the duty shift at the Tomb lasts sixty minutes: therefore, visitors can watch it at the stroke of every hour.
