On the anniversary of National Unity Day, the Constitution, the anthem and the flag - on March 17, 1861, Vittorio Emanuele II enacted Parliamentary Law 4671 making him the King of Italy -President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella laid a laurel wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Vittoriano.
The event was attended by the Presidents of the Senate, the Council of Ministers, the Constitutional Court and the Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies.
The President made the following statement, "162 years ago, under the Tricolor, popular plebiscites expressed the sovereignty and will that, through the work of the Risorgimento, had led to the establishment of the Italian state. The first thought goes to the generations that have accompanied this milestone, to those who, through their work, have contributed to the birth and growth of our country, promoting those values of civil coexistence, those ideals of freedom and democracy, peace and participation in the rule of law and the international community, which have found consecration in our Constitution".
