The Shield of Garibaldi. Ettore Ximenes and the Celebration of the Garibaldian Myth

CYCLE: Reintegrations: from deposits to the visitor route
SPEAKER: Valerio Terraroli
DATE: Thursday 18 December, 6 pm

The sculpture, modeled by the Sicilian Ettore Ximenes, was donated to Giuseppe Garibaldi by the Sicilian people on May 11, 1878. It stands as a rare example from the late 19th century that revives the parade shield model, with a full-length portrait of the leader at the center, the names of the Sicilian cities conquered on the sides, and, engraved on the border, the names of the Garibaldian fighters who participated in the Expedition of the Thousand. The catalog entry was written by Professor Stefania Cretella.
