Through VIVE it will retrace the key moments in Italian history, from the Risorgimento to Italian Unification and from the Fascist period to the founding of the Republic. This pluralistic and multifaceted narration mixing history and memory develops interaction between different disciplines, from anthropology to architecture, art and the cinema, nurturing our contemporary imagination.

Exploring the Vittoriano

A visit to the Vittoriano is an unmissable experience for anyone keen to explore Italian history and art. The complex was developed in 1878 to honour Italy’s first King Victor Emmanuel II and the whole Risorgimento process. Since 1921 it has housed the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and other historical Italian remembrances. Those attending enter through the monumental gateway on Piazza Venezia, climb to the Altar of the Fatherland and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and see the equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II. They will gasp at the size of Piazzale del Bollettino and the Sommoportico before then reaching the spectacular Panoramic Terrace to enjoy a unique view of the city of Rome.

Exploring Palazzo Venezia

For centuries the residence of Popes, cardinals, ambassadors and artists, Palazzo Venezia is a majestic Renaissance mansion set in the heart of Rome. Few, or perhaps none, of the city’s other buildings condense such a wealth of history, art and culture. The Renaissance in Palazzo Venezia

Palazzo Venezia is a symbol of the Roman Renaissance for its architectural forms inspired by the work of Leon Battista Alberti, its sculptural and painted decorations, such as the frescoes in the Sala delle Fatiche di Ercole, and for the great historical figures who have passed through its entrance. The visit is a journey through the Rome of the times and allows students to breathe in the atmosphere of this historic residence: Pope Paul II’s passion for collecting, the public festivities for carnival, Cardinal Domenico Grimani’s extraordinary library and the visits by great intellectuals such as Pietro Bembo and Erasmus.
