On Wednesday 13 and Thursday 14 November, the second appointment of the International Conference "Giorgio Vasari e le vie della Maniera tra terre piemontesi e Roma" was held at Palazzo Venezia, in the Sala del Refettorio, following the first appointment organised at the Archbishop's Seminary of Turin on 11 and 12 September.
The conference - organised in collaboration with the Department of Historical Studies of the University of Turin and the Department of Literary, Philosophical and Art History of the University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’ - was introduced by VIVE Director Edith Gabrielli, by Barbara Agosti, Professor of History of Modern Art at the University of Rome ‘Tor Vergata’, and by Maria Beltramini, Professor of History of Architecture at the University of Turin.
The choice of Palazzo Venezia is closely linked to the deep connection between the Palazzo and Vasari. Two of the artist's works are on display here: the ceiling from the Roman palazzo of Bindo Altoviti, and a Madonna with Child and St. John the Baptist, on loan from a private collection, which has recently been the subject of study and diagnostic investigations.
Palazzo Venezia also houses the relief Supper in the House of the Pharisee, part of the great machine designed by Vasari, which originally adorned the high altar of the basilica of Santa Croce in Bosco Marengo, and the bust-portrait of Pope Pius V, who commissioned the Aretine to build the monumental complex near Alexandria.
