On Tuesday, May 21, at 6 p.m., VIVE - Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia will host, in the Refectory Room of Palazzo Venezia, the presentation of the volume "Epistolario di Agostino Bertani" (Isri, Rome, 2023, two volumes) edited by Sergio La Salvia and Eva Cecchinato.
Agostino Bertani (1812-1886) was a leading exponent of Risorgimento and post-Risorgimento democracy and had a politically long life, with a public projection interrupted only by death. The Epistolario, which now sees the light of day in two volumes, gives due prominence to a character who spanned the country's history from the Milanese insurrection of 1848 to the advent of Agostino Depretis' historical Left. His letters thus deliver a portrait of a figure long regarded as "irregular" by both moderates and democrats.
The event, which marks the beginning of a virtuous collaboration between VIVE and the Institute for the History of the Italian Risorgimento, aims to offer a key to understanding not only a character, but also the generation that crossed Italy from the anti-Austrian uprisings to the dawn of socialist preaching, whose ideals and aspirations are reflected in Bertani's letters.
The meeting will be introduced by Edith Gabrielli, Director of VIVE and Alessandro Campi, Director of the Institute for the History of the Italian Risorgimento with moderation by Ester Capuzzo, Professor of Contemporary History at La Sapienza University of Rome. Fulvio Conti, University of Florence, and Carmine Pinto, University of Salerno, will discuss. Fabio Fabbri, former Minister of Defense of the Republic, is scheduled to speak.
