Depositi in mostra: Cena in casa del Fariseo by Angelo Marini know as il Siciliano

The VIVE - Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia, directed by Edith Gabrielli, inaugurates the Depositi in mostra exhibition cycle, dedicated to the enhancement of individual works of art, with the aim of presenting to the public the results of the Institute's research work.

Since 2020, VIVE has been promoting the systematic study of its collections, including those not currently on public display. The research work is carried out through rigorous scientific cataloging. This type of action, characteristic of any large museum, has been entrusted here to three working groups made up of specialists, mostly young people, coordinated by three university professors: for medieval art Alessandro Tomei, for modern art Barbara Agosti, and for contemporary art Valerio Terraroli.

The first work in the Depositi in mostra cycle in the exhibition is the Cena in casa del Fariseo, a relief that was recently studied by Clara Seghesio. Thanks to a renewed critical and historical analysis, the expert was able to revise the attribution of the work, proposing new interpretive elements that enrich its understanding.

On the occasion of the opening of the Deposits cycle in the exhibition, VIVE puts the wooden relief Cena in casa del Fariseo, part of the great machine conceived by Giorgio Vasari to adorn the high altar of the basilica of Santa Croce in Bosco Marengo, commissioned by Pio V, in dialogue with two significant works. These are the frescoes created for Palazzo Altoviti by Vasari himself and the bronze bust of the Roman school depicting Pope Pio V himself.
