CYCLE: Figures from the history of Rome in the past.
SPEAKER: Andrea Riccardi, historian
DATE: Thursday, May 23, 6 p.m.
Pius XII is a complex and controversial figure: promoter of Rome "open city," protector of the victims of totalitarianisms, pope of "silences" in the face of the Shoah, fine diplomat, tormented in his decisions, opponent of communism, or tireless seeker of peace... So many have been the interpretations and readings of the character: from the "black legend" to the unfinished beatification process. The historical analysis of his figure and the role of the Holy See, in the dramatic years of World War II, the postwar period and international communism, addresses a highly relevant knot in the history of the 20th century.
