Week 15. Processing marks rediscovered after cleaning

After cleaning, the surfaces of the frieze distinctly show signs of the tools used to work the Botticino marble.

Easily visible are the holes drilled to record on the stone the measurements taken from the plaster model. These measurements were acquired on the plaster with a tool called a pantograph and brought back onto the stone by making a small hole.

Also easily recognizable are the marks left by the various tools: chisels of various shapes and sizes; pointed chisels; and the teeth chisel, which leaves even, parallel grooves, used mainly for the bottoms.
