Vittoriano
Altar of the Fatherland and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
The great votive altar to the Nation encloses the monument to the fallen of the Great War
The Altar of the Fatherland, a gigantic lay altar, designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and decorated by Angelo Zanelli, stands on the first terrace of the Vittoriano: since 1921 it has been the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, i.e. the tomb of an Italian soldier who died in the First World War and was never identified.
