The British fascination with Rome is well known: time spent in this city has had a profound impact on the British cultural landscape through the centuries. The lecture will focus on the personal stories of Britons who traveled to Rome through different eras, beginning with the Grand Tour and ending with the founding of the British Academy (1901), a space where we still continue to cultivate cultural encounters with the city today.

Biography

Abigail Brundin is professor of Italian studies at the University of Cambridge and fellow of St Catharine's College, Cambridge and specializes in the literature and culture of Italy in the early modern period. Since 2021 she has been the director of the British Academy in Rome.
