Nilde Iotti and Tina Anselmi: the women behind the Republic

SERIES: From Rome to the rest of the world. Tales from a past that lives on
SPEAKER: Silvia Salvatici
DATE: Thursday 26 January, 6 pm
PLACE: Sala del Refettorio

First partisans and later leading political figures of the early decades of the Italian Republic, Nilde Iotti and Tina Anselmi were among the first women to hold high offices of state. Inspired by common aspects of their biographies, this encounter will focus on female politics in Italy’s long post-war period with a view to rereading the shift brought about by the recognition of political rights (women voted for the first time in 1946) within the broader context. It will place special emphasis on the tension between the new principles enshrined in the Constitution from an equality point of view and the persistence of profound gender asymmetries, all of which lay at the heart of female political commitment in the institutions, associations and trade unions.
