VIVE for the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Tactile experiences at the Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia
- Sunday 3 december, 11 am and 4 pm

VIVE, on 3 December 2023, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities which the Ministry of Culture adheres, organizes two accessible routes dedicated to the knowledge of cultural heritage with a view to universal accessibility and inclusion. Following the guidelines of the day, proclaimed in 1992 by the UN, the blind, partially sighted and partially sighted visitors will have the opportunity to participate in tactile itineraries, conducted by the VIVE educational team, dedicated to the Vittoriano and Palazzo Venezia in order to encourage ever wider participation in cultural heritage.

The tactile experiences are free of charge.

Tactile experience at Vittoriano

On Sunday 3 December 2023 at 11.00, on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, VIVE will create a tactile experience at the Vittoriano. An expert guide in museum accessibility will engage visitors in sensory explorations of the Vittoriano's spaces and works, the monument dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II, first king of Italy.

The mass of the monument will be perceived in an architectural-decorative key through an initial immersion focused on the materials. We will dedicate ourselves to in-depth listening to the different materials by simulating guided, individual and group explorations, gaining experience on the qualities and related tactile and material sensations of the architectural works and decorations. The large open spaces, the architectural forms and the full and empty volumes of the monument will also be known in relation to history, with insights dedicated to the Risorgimento, the Unification of Italy and the First World War. Also in this case, we will use models and support materials designed for an inclusive educational approach, aimed at both people with visual impairments  and normally sighted visitors.

Tactile experience at Palazzo Venezia

On Sunday 3 December 2023 at 4.00 p.m., on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, VIVE will create a tactile experience at Palazzo Venezia. An expert guide in museum accessibility leads visitors to discover Palazzo Venezia through a multisensory approach. Away from traffic noise, the tour begins in the garden to identify among the many species the bristling bark of Japanese palms, the sweet scent of magnolia blossoms, and the serrated leaves of acanthus plants. From there it continues with a tactile exploration of the Grand Lodge and the telling of the story of the building's founder, Pope Paul II Barbo. Finally, inside, participants will refine their tactile plantar sense on some of the details of the floors, identify the decorative motifs of the door  jambs, and compare the types, textures and textures of different materials used from the Renaissance to the present.

To understand some architectural-decorative choices that characterized the Renaissance phase of the Palace as well as the changes that occurred over the centuries, we will use models and support materials designed to put into practice an educational-inclusive knowledge approach, aimed at both people with visual impairments and normally sighted visitors.
