On March 10, 1872 in Pisa, hidden behind the pseudonym of George Brown, Giuseppe Mazzini died, a leading exponent of Risorgimento patriotism whose ideas contributed decisively to the formation of the Italian Unitary State.
News of his passing spread with such speed that it drew a good number of followers to his bedside in Pisa, of whom Silvestro Lega was also a member.
It was precisely on that occasion that the Modigliana painter produced The Dying Mazzini , on loan from the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design in Providence (USA), through which he succeeds in restoring to us the Father of the Fatherland's last moments of agony with extraordinary emotional intensity.
Also present in the exhibition: the portrait of Garibaldi and Don Giovanni Verità, the Incredulity of St. Thomas, the color box with palette and brushes that belonged to the artist and the bust of Lega made by Fantacchiotti, sculptor and friend of the painter.
