The visit offers a unique opportunity: to enter the restoration site of the Altar of the Fatherland. The Altar of the Fatherland is the central part – curvilinear in shape – of the Vittoriano, the heart of the monument. Designed by the architect Giuseppe Sacconi as a great votive altar to the nation and its ideals, since 1921 it has housed one of the most sacred memories of the country's history, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Its decoration, carved by the Brescian sculptor Angelo Zanelli, presents the Goddess Roma at the centre and at the sides two reliefs depicting Love of the Fatherland and Work, by the Brescian sculptor Angelo Zanelli. In this way the participants will be able to hear from the restorers' voice how an artwork can be rescued and restored to view.
