The art and architecture of the Vittoriano over the years

A symbol of unified Italy and, later, of the Italian Republic, the Vittoriano is a meaningful place for the collective imagination. Born as an avant-garde art project, a new modern forum, it then served as the scenography for countless films and television programmes. A suggestive visit to explore the great spaces of the Vittoriano together, to retrace its history and discover similarities and differences with the art and architecture of the past. Like a puzzle, we will be able to graphically reconstruct the iconic image of the Vittoriano, inspired by the gaze of artists and architects.

How can we make the founding values of a nation visible? What are the images and words that translate them into the collective imagination and that make them immediately recognisable to everyone? This special visit is dedicated to the main visual representation of the ideals of a united and independent Italy: the Vittoriano. Along the way, which includes a stop at the Central Museum of the Risorgimento, we will encounter important words such as ‘homeland’, ‘identity’, ‘history’, ‘future’ and ‘nation’ to reflect together on how their meaning can be interpreted over time. At the end of the journey, we will give shape and colour to our thoughts and suggestions, reinterpreting the founding values of the country with new and personal words and images.
