This parade banner, which was exhibited in Piazza del Popolo in Rome, was made in 1846 when Pius IX (1846-1870), shortly after his ascent to the Papal throne, appeared as a proponent of the new liberal tendency through the promulgation of certain measures such as the amnesty for political offences or the freedom of the press. This attitude changed radically in 1848 when the pontiff decided to withdraw his military contingent alongside the army of Charles Albert of Savoy during the First War of Independence against Austria.
