Many, indeed a huge number, consider the entire complex of the Vittoriano as the Altar of the Fatherland. Alone, this habit underlines its importance. Conceived as an integral part of Giuseppe Sacconi's project, the Altar experienced a key period between the second and third decade of the twentieth century: it was then that it received the sculpture frieze by Angelo Zanelli, the winner of a hard-fought and exciting competition.

But now let’s stand and snap to attention: the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, added in 1921 to commemorate the fallen of the First World War, and its guard of honour recall values, thoughts and a demeanour marked by respect. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier marks the life of the country, through the deposition of a laurel wreath during official ceremonies.
